Marine Retirement Ceremony at MCAS Miramar | San Diego Military Photographer

There is something special about seeing a Marine surrounded by the people who have been part of the journey. Fellow Marines stand alongside family members. A flag is presented. Then, after the formal ceremony, everyone gathers for photographs that bring those connections together.

This Marine retirement ceremony at MCAS Miramar brought all of that into one meaningful day. From the flags inside the hangar to family portraits beside the aircraft, it was an honor to document a career milestone with so much personal history behind it.

I’m Alisha, the photographer behind Alisha Mowry Photography. As a San Diego military photographer with more than a decade behind the camera and nearly 20 years of experience as a military spouse, I bring both professional skill and personal understanding to these occasions. I know how much a retirement means to the person in uniform—and to the family standing beside them.

A Marine Corps Retirement Ceremony in a Miramar Hangar

The setting helped tell the story before the ceremony even began. Rows of flags framed the gathering inside the hangar, while the aircraft and open flight line connected the celebration to the Marine’s military world.

For this MCAS Miramar retirement, I photographed the formal exchanges, the presentation of the folded American flag, and the people gathered to mark the occasion. Wider photographs preserved the scale of the hangar and the ceremony setting. Closer images brought the attention back to expressions, gestures, and the connections between people.

That balance matters. A retirement gallery should help you remember both what happened and who was there to share it.

Military Retirement Photography That Includes the Family

One of my favorite parts of this day was making space for family photographs after the ceremony. We photographed the Marine with his family beside the aircraft, created portraits with his children, and took a few moments for photographs of the couple together.

The ceremony recognizes a military career. The family photographs preserve the relationships that have been part of it.

Having lived military life myself, I understand the weight behind those images. Moves, deployments, changing plans, and time apart become part of a family’s history. A retirement offers a rare opportunity to gather, take a breath, and have everyone in the photograph together.

I also photographed fellow Marines and the larger group of loved ones. Those friendships and professional relationships deserve a place in the story, too. Years from now, a group photograph can bring back names, memories, and a whole season of life.

Why Experience Matters When Choosing a San Diego Military Photographer

A military ceremony requires preparation, attention, and respect for the occasion. Important exchanges happen quickly, and the photographer needs to be ready while allowing the ceremony to unfold naturally.

My approach combines attentive ceremony coverage with relaxed direction for portraits. During the formal proceedings, I watch for the key exchanges and the responses around them. Afterward, I help organize family and group photographs so you can enjoy time with your guests while still getting the portraits you want.

The photographs from this Miramar retirement show that range: formal moments among the flags, a black-and-white portrait with the folded flag, Marines together on the flight line, and smiling family portraits beneath the aircraft’s wings.

If you are looking for a military retirement photographer in San Diego, that is the kind of complete story I want you to have. Beautiful portraits matter. So does remembering the people and details that made the day yours.

Planning Retirement Photos at MCAS Miramar

As you plan your retirement photography, start with the ceremony timeline and the people you want included. Let me know about special presentations, meaningful details, and any photographs that are especially important to your family.

It also helps to set aside dedicated time for portraits. This ceremony’s aircraft backdrop made a wonderful setting for family, couples, and group photographs. Your portrait locations will depend on the permissions, access, and conditions for your event, so we will work with your coordinator when planning them.

Think beyond the large group photograph, too. A portrait with your children, a photograph with a mentor, or a few minutes with your spouse can become some of the most personal images in your gallery.
